Edwin en ik hebben gisteravond 2 films van Edward D. Wood Jr. gezien. Ed Wood is natuurlijk vooral bekend van de slechtste film ooit "Plan 9 From Outer Space" ook wel "Graverobbers form outer space". Dezelfde Ed Wood heeft nog meer toptitels op zijn naam staan, namelijk "Glen or Glenda", "Bride of the Monster" (ook wel "Bride of the Atom"), en "Jail Bait".
Edwin en ik hebben "Glen or Glenda" en "Bride of the Monster" gekeken. En wat waren de films goed! "Glen or Glenda" ging over een maatschappelijk vraagstuk, en diens problemen en vooroordelen: travestie. Bij menig van jullie zal het niet onbekend zijn dat Ed Wood ook wel eens vrouwenkleren aantrok. Deze film was een mooi portret die de travestie eens van de andere kant belichtte.
"Bride of the Monster" was een zeer spannende horrorthriller waar je gewoon kippenvel van kreeg. Bella Lugosi speelde de gemene wetenschapper die een superras wilde creeeren dmv atomstralen. Gelukkig was er een groot monster in de vorm van een inktvis die deze gek kon tegenhouden!

Inderdaad, ze waren geweldig! Vooral leuk in BOTM: het moment dat Lobo het hele decor laat bewegen en de scene waarin dr. Vornoff opgegeten wordt door een levenloze rubberen inktvis en waarbij je duidelijk ziet dat Vornoff zelf de tentakels beweegt!
Glen or Glenda was meer een voorlichtingsfilm met rare scenes er tussen. Midden in de film zit bijvoorbeeld een verkrachtingsscene die echt helemaal niks met de rest van de film te maken heeft. Heel erg vaag... En de monologen van Bela waren ook onbegrijpelijk: 'Beware! The big green dragon is on your doorstep.. It wil eat the little boy! Take care!' |
