Ach ja, erg hoor. Er sterven elke dag zoveel mensen aan een onnatuurlijke dood en daar treuren we ook niet om. In Zimbabwe zijn er net nog 40 doden gevallen bij een treinongeluk en daar hoor je niemand over. Maar ja, dat waren natuurlijk ook geen amerikanen.
Wel grappig om te zien hoe CNN uren vol weet te praten zonder iets te zeggen. Dan komt er eens een familielid aan het woord, en dan weer iemand die het heeft zien gebeuren. |

N.B. DLL: Lang verhaal! Overslaan dus
Ik kan niet anders zeggen dan dat Georg de schrijnende waarheid op een zeer (al dan niet ethisch) correcte manier onder woorden brengt. Mijn medeleven gaat zowel uit naar de families en vrienden van de veertig mensen die in Zimbabwe hun leven hebben verloren als naar de families en vrienden van de zeven mensen die op 63 km hoogte boven Texas hun leven hebben verloren.
Toch wens ik nog even een kleine relativering aan te brengen. Dagelijks, 24 uur per dag, sterven honderdduizenden mensen over de hele wereld. Ze komen om door ziekte, geweld, ongelukken, ouderdom of gebrekkige (economische) omstandigheden die ervoor zorgen dat er niet meer aan de primaire levensbehoeften voldaan kan worden. Bijna elk weggenomen leven laat een leegte achter bij families en vrienden en is oorzaak voor veelal lang verdriet. Dit sterven is onderdeel van het leven en is een feit waarmee wij, de levenden, dienen te leren leven.
Natuurlijk schamen wij ons diep voor het gebrek aan handelen om de gebrekkige (economische) omstandigheden te verhelpen en worden wij weer eens met onze neus op de feiten gedrukt wanneer er mensen door die omstandigheden sterven. Echter, het medeleven dat wij tonen hangt van twee factoren af:
- Wordt aan het sterven van die mensen media aandacht gegeven, en zo ja, hoe en hoeveel?
- Zijn die mensen bekenden van ons, of speelt het zich dicht af bij huis?
Vooral die eerste factor speelt een bijna allesbepalende rol. Wanneer het onbekenden zijn, hangt ons medeleven af van hoeveel media aandacht er aan hun sterven wordt gegeven. Als alle sterfgevallen met naam en toenaam en levensgeschiedenis en overlijdensomstandigheden elke dag in de krant zouden worden genoemd en we zouden de theoretische mogelijkheid hebben om van elk stervensgeval op de hoogte te worden gebracht, dan zouden we ook (moeten) stilstaan bij het overlijden van die mensen.
Een treinongeluk in een ver, vreemd land spreekt minder aan dan een ongeluk met moderne ruimtevaartuigen in een ver maar minder vreemd land - ook al omdat een space shuttle zo aan onze menselijke wens om ons universum op alle mogelijke manieren te ontdekken, appelleert. Wanneer die ontdekking tegenslag ondervindt, heeft dat een schijnbaar zware inslag op ons als mensheid. Een dergelijke zware inslag heeft dan gelijk invloed op hoe wij aankijken tegen het sterven van de mensen die om onze wens om te ontdekken zijn gestorven.
Begrijp me goed - dit alles is niet een excuus om minder stil te staan bij het overlijden van sommige mensen dan van andere. Ik wil louter en alleen maar aangeven waarom onze reacties bij sterfgevallen kunnen en zullen blijven verschillen. |
