Ok, vanaf nu zijn mijn dagen in Ierland. Mijn reis was lang, en het vliegtuig gedeelte was geweldig. Altijd weer een hele ervaring om boven de wolken uit te vliegen. Zo'n grijze dag wordt daar meteen een stuk zonniger van.
Ik heb voorlopig voor 2 weken een kamer op het Trinity College. Ik zal snel op zoek naar medestudenten en een definitief onderkomen. Vanavond heb ik met twee Duitse bedrijfskunde studenten een Guinness bier gedronken in een Ierse pub. Smaakt vreemd, maar ik mocht van mijn buurvrouw aan de bar even Guinness met zwarte bosbessen-mix proeven, dat vond ik erg lekker, dus ik weet al wat ik morgen ga bestellen.

20%, dat is nogal wat ja. Die 5% snap ik niet helemaal, volgens mij is daar studiefinancieering voor.
Goed, ik kom natuurlijk onder andere even langs om verslag te doen van de afgelopen dagen. Ik heb nu alweer 2 nachten geslapen in mijn nieuwe bed, en hier zal ik waarschijnlijk de rest van dit jaar doorbrengen. De eerste kamer was bij een oud mannetje thuis, nogal ver van Trinity. De tweede was iets dichter bij, maar het huis en de omgeving was een armzalige boel. Het derde waar ik naar ging kijken is waar ik nu zit, een redelijke ruime wooneenheid. Ik deel mijn kamer welliswaar met een Franse jongen, maar dat is geen probleem. Er slaapt nog een Rus in een eenspersoonskamer, en zo delen we dit huis met ons drieen. We hebben kabel-tv, wasmachine, douche/bad, keuken, enz. tot onze beschikking en er is internet over de analoge telefoonlijn. De kosten van de huur zijn 330 euro per maand, en daar komen overige rekeningen nog bij. Vergeleken met andere locaties is dit redelijk goedkoop en tevens best lux.
Wat me trouwens verbaast is hoe laat ze hier zijn met de aanleg van kabel internet en ADSL. We zitten hier 20 min. lopen van het centrum van Dublin, nog middenin de stad, en de telefoonlijn is nog niet geschikt voor ADSL. Verder is de locale kabel exploitant in 1 wijk aan het experimenteren met kabel internet.
Ik heb vanmiddag eens wat pasta en pasta-mix gekocht, ik hoop dat het vanavond gaat lukken. De rijst met doperwtjes ging gisteren redelijk goed. :-) |

Hehe, aardig jongens! Ja, internet is nog nooit zo langzaam geweest. Door de slechte kabels hier (vermoed ik), is het soms maar 28.8 kbps. Maar goed, ik merk wel hoeveel ervaring ik eigenlijk heb met zulk langzaam internet.

Oeps! Je wilt vast wel geloven dat mij de snor ook was opgevallen, dat ik me daarna dus heb geschoren en de foto opnieuw heb gemaakt, en toen toch nog weer de verkeerde foto heb gezipped...
Ik heb deze woning gevonden via een briefje dat de Franse jongen, Matthew, had opgehangen aan een prikbord bij de Accomodation Advisory Service op Trinity. Net die dag had ik mijn mobiele telefoon op orde (086 0893345), en heb hem toen opgebeld. Ik heb nog steeds het gevoel dat ik hier erg mazzel mee heb gehad.
Dublin is een stad met twee gezichten, of misschien wel meer, maar ik ken er twee. Er zijn arme wijken met arme mensen en woningen in slechte conditie, vooral ten noorden van de rivier de Liffey. Ten zuiden zijn wel de betere wijken en ik denk ook de meeste touristische attracties. Het centrum omvat Grafton Street, ten zuid-westen van Trinity en O'Connel Street, ten noorden van Trinity voorbij O'Connel Bridge, een brede brug over de Liffey. In en rond het centrum vind ik Dublin een leuke stad, daar zijn denk ik ook de meeste oude gebouwen bewaard gebleven.
Wat me verbaast is dat er een paar dikke verkeersaders dwars door de stad heen lopen, en tevens dwars door het centrum, waar het dan ook erg druk is met auto's. Er zijn wel twee straten, Graften Street en Henry Street, ongeveer net als de Heerestraat in Groningen, met alleen veel druk wandelverkeer.
Nou, goed nieuws over breedband internet. Van gisteren op vandaag is onze telefoonlijn plotseling wel geschikt voor ADSL en vanaf 6 oktober kunnen we het waarschijnlijk gebruiken. Ik heb inderdaad alles wat mijn hartje begeert, zielsgelukkig word je daarvan. ;-)
Wat nog veel leuker is, is dat ik onlangs een mailtje kreeg over dat in Nederland het ADSL binnenkort een stapje sneller wordt (bij XS4ALL iig). Frode kan dus uitkijken naar 1024/160 kbps voor dezelfde maandelijkse kosten.
Ik hoop de ADSL kosten met z'n drieen te betalen, maar Matthew is niet zo'n internetter, denkt dat hij het wel kan doen met wat op Trinity beschikbaar is, vindt het daarom niet zo nodig, en wil niet meebetalen. |

Ja, meestal wel, maar niet als de MSN gateway eruit ligt. En aan deze gateway wordt op het moment gewerkt want Microsoft heeft onlangs wijzigingen gemaakt in het MSN protocol.
Maar goed, ik ben zowiezo vrijwel nooit online op het moment. Dat gaat veel teveel in de kosten lopen. Ik hoop dat dit over een week voorbij is. :-) |
